🏆 Stuttering Identity: Who Defines Us with Dr. Derek Daniels

Identity is a complex phenomenon and stuttering can affect our identities in a variety of ways. How do we come to understand ourselves? How do we come to understand ourselves as individuals who stutter? How might our identities change over time? This presentation will discuss factors that influence our identities, intersectionality of multiple identities, and ways that individuals who stutter think about identity.

🎤 Presenter

Dr. Derek E. Daniels is an associate professor and graduate program director in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He has presented locally, nationally, and internationally on stuttering. Derek is a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Fluency Disorders, and an assistant editor for Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences and Disorders. He is a person who stutters and conducts research on psychosocial aspects of stuttering. In particular, Derek's research focuses on public perceptions of stuttering, and factors that influence the psychosocial experiences of individuals who stutter. He is particularly interested in identity, stigma, intersectionality, self-help groups, and culturally responsive practices as they pertain to individuals who stutter and individuals with communication challenges. In addition, he is also interested in qualitative research methods, sociocultural (Vygotskian) theory, and social constructionism. Derek is a native of Houston, TX, and currently enjoys urban life in Detroit. He is a former President of the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association (MSHA), and currently serves as MSHA's Vice-President (VP) for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

  2. Participants will think about the different means by which identities can be formed, influenced, and shaped.

  3. Participants will think about ways to facilitate positive identities for the clients they work with
